KPHO Backup Installed

In an effort to add a bit of local flavor to the site, I asked Jon Thorwaldson (J.T.) to share his recent experiences with the members. I hope you enjoy his writing as much as I did!

As you all know, a good backup plan includes backup equipment.  If that equipment doesn’t exist, one failure can turn catastrophic real quick.  That is what happened at KPHO TV almost a year ago when we lost a piece of our transmission line.  This was actually the only loss of this kind that has happened to us in the thirty six years I have been here.  Being off-air for more than a few minutes never turns out to be a good thing.  To help improve the odds of that not happening again, KPHO has now finished the installation of a new auxiliary transmitter and antenna.

A Guide to SNMP for Broadcast Engineers

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) has been a part of computer and networking systems for many years. Now, this standardized control language is migrating into more and more broadcast-oriented equipment and systems, and new facility control software is being developed to enable the use of this powerful tool to monitor and manage equipment as part of an overall broadcast facility control plan.
